Worming Your Pigeons - Why Do it & What To Use
Posted by Daniel Evans on
Hairworms and roundworms are widespread in pigeon flocks, whereas tapeworms are less common. These worm types live as parasites in the small intestine of pigeons. Pathogen: The hairworm, Capillaria obsignata - a very slender, hair-like parasite - infests various poultry species in addition to pigeons. Hairworm eggs become infective in the environment after 8-9 days. The pigeon roundworm, Ascaridia columbae, only occurs in pigeons. The eggs become infective in the environment after 2-3 weeks. Two types of tapeworm, Hymenolepis columbae and Raillietina columbae, infest pigeons. Their emergence is dependent on suitable intermediate hosts (snails, beetles, ants), which they require in order to develop. Pigeons only become...

The four most common diseases affecting racing pigeons are: · Coccidiosis · Canker · Worms · Mite Coccidia are single celled organisms not related to bacteria, worms, fungi or viruses. All pigeons carry cocci to a lesser or greater degree. Pigeons pick up the coccidia in the form of an oocyst. This develops inside the gut and is released as sporozoites by the pigeon’s digestive tract. Sporozoites penetrate the gut wall. Inside the gut cell wall the sporozoites divide to form a merozoite, the merozoites rupture to release more which invade other gut wall cells....
Paramyxovirus infections - What do we know and how can we treat it?

Paramyxovirus infection occurs in pigeons as an acute disease, taking an epidemic course. Pathogen: The paramyxovirus is related to the Newcastle disease pathogen, but not identical. The virus is highly pathogenic for pigeons, but not for other domestic bird species. Course of the disease: Within just a few days of infection, both visibly and latently affected birds shed the virus in secretions from the conjunctiva, nose and throat, as well as in the faeces. The incubation period ranges from 3 to 21 days. Up to 30% of affected pigeons may recover spontaneously after around 4 weeks of illness. Symptoms of...

Common diseases Affecting Racing Pigeons. The first of a series. Ornithosis Ornithosis starts as a watery eye which quickly goes sticky or purulent due to secondary infection. Ornithosis is caused by a Chlamydial organism. A large percentage of pigeons in a flock carry chlamydia in their blood stream. The cause of ‘one eyed cold’ is usually due to for example a new pigeon entering a loft will undergo stress, this causes a shedding of the infective chlamydia. The other birds in the loft are susceptible since they would not have immunity to the newly introduced chlamydia. Other main stress factors are;...
